On October 11, 2007, vandals broke into the Swift-Purscell Boys’ Home, stole property belonging to the home and started a fire. The fire completely destroyed the Great House and Administration Center. The workshop area and parts of the kitchen and laundry were also destroyed. Fortunately the new dormitories, cafeteria and study area were all saved. The boys were not harmed, but they were scared as they watched their home being destroyed. Their biggest concern was that they would be “homeless” once again.
We visited the Boys’ Home in November 2007 and again in January 2008. We are happy to report that the boys are doing fine. Although the loss of the Great House was tragic, many good things have occurred since the fire. The Swift-Purscell Boys’ Home was honored by the Jamaican government as the best run children’s home in Jamaica. The cafeteria that we have been funding with your generous donations, our fund raisers and the Koz’s Fun Fish painted items is now complete and four months ahead of schedule! Our fund raising efforts are now being used to repair the kitchen and laundry room.
